Heat Exchanger Calculator

This spreadsheet calculates the amount of time your immersion or counterflow chiller will take to cool a given volume of boiling wort.

How to Use
  1. Measure the flow rate of your cooling water supply. The easiest way is to get a bucket of known volume and time how long it takes to fill (e.g. 5 gal bucket fills in 10 minutes = 0.5gal/min).
  2. Measuring the cold side inlet temperature (i.e. the temperature of your cooling water).
  3. Your next brew day, measure the starting outlet temperature of your cooling water and your wort. It is critical that this is a "Time=0" measurement.
  4. Enter all of these measurements into the spreadsheet, converting as appropriate to the specified units.
